Cancer is the crab, and its stars are the faintest in the zodiac; it was once called the Dark Sign. The Babylonians named it with a word that meant both crab and snapping turtle. The Greeks told how a crab came to bite Heracles while he fought the many-headed Hydra, and how the goddess Hera, who was no friend of Heracles, placed it among the stars. At its heart is a soft glow you can see on a dark night, the Beehive cluster, which Galileo found to be full of stars. The Tropic of Cancer still carries its name.
Here it is as the sign lives on earth, claws raised, in the night sky where its constellation sits. Intuitive, nurturing, protective: the three words astrology has long given the sign.
If you were born June 21 through July 22, you were born under the astrological sign of Cancer. Whether Cancer is your Sun sign, your rising, or the person you are buying for, it is a quiet way to carry your corner of the sky.
