Psychic is in.
Seventies bubble lettering in orange and cream, two black cats in gold crescent-moon collars flanking a purple crystal ball, and a stack of three books beneath them labeled PAST, PRESENT and FUTURE. Moon phases across the top, daisies either side, and a banner reading INTUITION · GUIDANCE · GOOD VIBES.
The sign hanging in the window is doing the joke. It is the same sign as OPEN or BACK IN FIVE MINUTES — a perfectly ordinary trading notice, for a perfectly unordinary trade.
That is the register the whole design is in. The storefront psychic is a real tradition with a real history, somewhere between a service and a piece of Americana, and it has never taken itself entirely seriously. Neither does this.
For readers, for the people who book them, and for anyone who thinks a crystal ball and two disapproving cats is a fair summary of the profession.
The retro edition of Psychic Is In, and a companion to My Familiar Knows The Ending. More in Psychic Gifts, Cat Lovers Gifts and gifts for tarot readers.
